The team consists of 30 civilian volunteers who are first and foremost mountaineers. The team is under the control of and insured by the Police Service. It has charitable status and also receives some funding from the Mountain Rescue Committee of Scotland which is the governing body for all the Scottish Civilian Mountain Rescue Teams.
It was formed in 2001 at the request of the Strathclyde Chief Constable who felt that cover in this area was poor.
Our primary role is search and rescue within the mountains and upland areas, however we may also be used by the police for missing person searches and any other situation where they would normally have difficulty operating, i.e. steep ground, ravines etc.
