Oban Mountain Rescue’s search and rescue dog, Sky, recently achieved the top grade for search and rescue dogs in UK. Sky was originally rescued by Argyll Animal Aid and re-homed with her handler’s family in 2005. Since then she has been training with Oban Mountain Rescue and the Search & Rescue Dog Association of Southern Scotland (SARDA). Along with her handler she is now qualified as part of a full mountain call out status grade 5 dog team, the standard for which is recognised by the National SARDA of the UK. Thanks to support from family, friends, OMRT and SARDA Sky has gone from rescued dog to rescue dog. |

Oban Mountain Rescue Team hosted a training course last weekend for 10 other Scottish Mountain Rescue Teams on the theme of technical rigging and safe lowering techniques. The course was tutored by Jonathon Hart (Lochaber), Tony Powell (Oban), Stuart Johnson and Jon Sanders (Both Tayside). All are experienced members of their respective teams. Around 30 participants took part in a series of workshops based at the Oban MR post on Sinclair Drive and several crag locations around Oban.
Stuart Johnston, Mountain Rescue Committee of Scotland Training Officer, remarked “ This is one of the first of a series of events organised by the Mountain Rescue Committee of Scotland designed to share good practice amongst Scottish Mountain Rescue on safe rigging systems. Everyone enjoyed the opportunity to learn from each other and the Oban team provided a great venue and hospitality.”
Tony Powell, Oban Mountain Rescue Training Officer, said “ It was a good opportunity to test Oban Team’s methods against other teams’ methods. I think we can be re-assured that the systems we use past muster but there were one or two tips I can take back that might further improve the way we do things in the team.”
The Mountain Rescue Committee of Scotland thanked all those who made the weekend a success and look forward to taking this and other similar events out to teams across Scotland.

Oban MRT recently held our annual training weekend at Rothiemurchas Lodge on the edge of the Lairig Ghru in the Cairngorms. The weather was very good to us and all 20 members who attended enjoyed long mountaineering days on the high hill's. Saturday morning dawned clear and frosty and saw several teams leave early for the high corries of Braeriach and Cairntoul with two groups ascending different ridges in the corries and one group climbing a gully high in Corrie Bhrocain on Braeriach. Another team ascended the Fiacal ridge in the Northern Corries and then headed out to Beinn Macdhui. Sunday was again a lovely frosty morning with teams heading onto the Cairngorm - Carn Etchachan - Beinn Macdui areas by various routes. Another team climbed Collies Ridge on Lurchers Crag in the Lairig Ghru. There were lots of tired and hungary people in the vehicles as we headed back west on Sunday evening, however any thoughts of rest and food were soon shattered as the callout came in as we headed down towards Roy Bridge.......
